What to do when a dental emergency happens.

Knowing the first steps can protect your comfort and make urgent treatment easier.

Emergency dental care

Severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken restoration should be assessed promptly. Call your dentist and explain what happened so the team can advise you.

If a tooth is knocked out

Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is clean, gently place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk and seek urgent care immediately.

If a tooth is chipped or broken

Save any fragments if you can. Rinse gently, avoid chewing on that side, and use a cold compress if there is swelling.

If you have swelling or severe pain

Call promptly. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum, and seek emergency medical care if swelling affects breathing or swallowing.
